Neeta Lulla is a prominent celebrity fashion designer who has changed the face of the fashion industry. In an exclusive interview with HerZindagi, she shared insights on her journey as a fashion designer and how the fashion industry has changed since she started working. 

 

In essence with the theme of International Women’s Day, we spoke to several women personalities who shattered barriers and stood out in the male-dominated industry. In light of the theme, we got a chance to speak to Neeta Lulla, a renowned fashion designer who has designed some of the iconic outfits in her career and thus made it to the headlines. How Does Neeta Lulla Rose To Stardom? 

Neeta Lulla doesn’t need an introduction today. But back in time, she struggled a lot to mark her name in the ever-evolving fashion industry. Talking about her journey, Neeta told us that she was introduced to the fashion industry by her father back in the 80s when the only thing she knew about fashion was through fashion magazines. “Fashion designers were not a common phenomenon,” Neeta said. “I joined the industry as a costume designer but slowly I stepped into film fashion designing”, she added. 

Behind The Scenes From Devdas 

Talking about her experience while working on the iconic film Devdas, Neeta shared that a night before the finale shoot Sanjay Leela Bhansali changed the narrative. He wanted 12 yards of white saree for Aishwarya as she ran down. It seemed impossible but anyway, she managed to get the extra saree and fabric along with the embroidery before the shoot. 

Challenges In The Fashion Industry

Fashion is an ever-evolving industry and thus it’s important to keep up with the trend to ensure that you come up with different ideas. “I still struggle to live up to my legacy”, Neeta Lulla said. “Every day I learn something new and try to put it in the process of my experiences in the past to create something new, ” she added. However, her love for fashion makes these challenges fun for her. Moreover, keeping up with the pressure and managing the timeline while designing costumes for the films is also one of the biggest challenges in the fashion industry.

Neeta Lulla’s Untold Story On National Award

Neeta Lulla received National Awards four times in her fashion designing career for movies Lamhe, Devdas, Jodha Akbar and Bal Gandharv. However, while talking about her first encounter with the National Award Neeta Lulla said that she had no idea about it. She even told her husband to receive the award on her behalf. But actress Sridevi made her realise the importance of the award and when she went for it, she acknowledged and realised the magnanimity of the award.
