Meta launched its fact-checking programme in 2016 to reduce misinformation on the internet. Facebook was criticized by its users in 2016 for spreading fake news, especially during the crucial U.S. Presidential election. Meta’s Transparency Center explained how non-partisan third parties and organizations that are certified by the International Fact-Checking Network, consistently check the accuracy of content online. The Meta fact-checking update is a new video that was posted on Meta’s website by CEO Mark Zuckerberg

Why Did Meta Make the Update?Mark’s reasoning behind the 180-degree move was the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Mark explained in the video his beliefs: “The recent election also feels like a cultural pivot point to once again prioritize speech. The legacy media wrote endlessly about the dangers of misinformation to democracy after Trump was elected. But we tried to be fair and not become arbiters of the truth. The fact-checkers were too political and destroyed more trust in the U.S. than they created. Users will be invited to participate in the conversation by becoming contributors. They will also rate content and request more information. To prevent bias, users from different perspectives must agree on the rating.
