If you’ve never travelled by boat before, you might have a few questions… You might be wondering what it actually feels like, or what the routine looks like, or if it’s all that different from other kinds of travel, and the short answer is yes, it really is.
Because the thing about boats is that they slow everything down in the best possible way, and you still get where you’re going, of course, but the pace is a lot slower, and the experience feels so much better. Plus, once you’ve tried it, it’s hard to go back. So with that in mind, keep reading to find out more about what it’s really like to travel by boat.
Everyday Life Looks Different
When you’re on a boat, your day isn’t shaped by time in the same way, and you’re not always looking at the clock or rushing to squeeze things in. You can wake up when the light changes, you can make coffee when you feel like it, and you can decide what to do next based on the weather and the mood and what feels right. It’s all down to you.
There is a rhythm to sailing and being on a boat, and sometimes that kind of routine is exactly what’s needed, especially when it’s done in a way that isn’t all that strict, but that really helps. The fact is that most people don’t realise they need that kind of thing until they get to experience it, and when you’re on a boat, that’s the overall experience you end up with.
You’re More Involved
Travelling by boat isn’t like sitting on a train or catching a flight because you’re more involved in the movement (and you might even be in charge of the boat anyway), and that’s something that makes it truly special.
Yes, it might also be hard work sometimes (it depends how much you want to be involved), but that’s all part of the fun, and you’ll definitely feel a lot more connected to everything, which is quite a unique experience.
There’s Space To Think
It’s hard to explain, but being on the water does something to your head, perhaps because there’s less distraction, less pressure, and generally less stuff happening all around you. You’re still doing things, still chatting and planning and sorting out meals and making stops, but there’s a lot of room between all that to do plenty of other things, which is what makes travel so special.
It’s Not Just For Experts
It’s going to depend a lot of the type of boating trip you organise, but most of the time you don’t have to know all that much about sailing to get something out of it – you can hire staff to help you, or you can go on a cruise, for example, so there’s no need to worry.
However, if you do want to be the one in total control – and you got experience and all the necessary permits – then looking at sailing yachts for sale and having your own boat can be a fantastic way to travel as well.
Why Not Try It?
In the end, the only real way to know what it’s like is to try it; you don’t need to commit to a big trip or buy your own boat straight away – just start with something small, give yourself time to get used to it and see how it feels.
It might be that it instantly clicks with you, and if it does, it’ll stay with you, and you’ll probably start wondering why you didn’t do it sooner.
