Waymo received nearly 600 parking tickets in San Francisco alone last year
Waymo has over 300 driverless cars zipping around San Francisco. While they obey traffic laws, parking can be a problem. Washington Post cites city records that show these robots received 589 parking violations totaling $65,065 last year. These included everything from parking in prohibited zones to blocking traffic.
In fairness, it’s not hard to get a parking ticket when you live in San Francisco. They are distributed by the city like flyers. According to the San Francisco Standard the approximate number was 1.2 millions last year. A Waymo spokesperson told The Post the company was working to solve the problem. However, we would guess it won’t be until all cars are driverless. Waymo vehicles will sometimes drop off passengers in loading zones when there is no other choice but to use a busy main road or an area far away from their destination. Sometimes they “park briefly” in between trips when too far away from a Waymo location. Waymo vehicles are likely to make the same decisions as human drivers do, and receive the same tickets, until we leave the picture.
