It’s been a long while since Volvo unveiled its all-electric 7-seater SUV in Stockholm, Sweden two years ago until present day for the actual test drive. The patience and perfection are always the priority when it comes to building a car with advanced software, technology and innovations. Built in the US at the Volvo Cars factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina, the flagship SUV maintains its Scandinavian influence, design, and safety while offering another full-size, luxury-electric utility to the marketplace.
To become familiar with the offerings of the latest EV to tempt our passions for sustainability, we headed to Southern California’s Newport Coast where the international media launch of the 2025 Volvo EX90 was being hosted. The biggest news from the event was that the Swedish EV can travel 300 miles with wheels of 20″ or 22″. It will also go 310 miles with wheels of 21″. This is the standard for a vehicle’s range, as anything less will make you question whether it can handle long interstate drives. The e-SUV also features one of Bowers & Wilkins’ most electrifying sound system I have ever heard, with its Abbey Road Studios sound setting. Impressive is an understatement.
Volvo says the EX90 embodies the company’s Scandinavian design principle of form following function. The EX90 is a flagship electric SUV built on a new platform that focuses on intelligent mobility and advanced safety. The EX90 represents the first Volvo all-electric vehicle to be built in a new generation. It also symbolizes the company’s latest engineering techniques. The EX90’s profile looks digitized compared with the XC90 gasoline model. The grilleless front fascia, and the heavily covered rims will make it obvious to onlookers that this is an electrical vehicle. The luxury SUV is more likely to appeal to families than individuals who are looking for a ruggedly-styled or uber sporty electric SUV. Rivian is the answer!
The Sand Dune EX90 that I tested was a Twin Motor Performance AWD model powered by a 111kWh lithium-ion battery and two permanent-magnet electric motors that distributed 510 horsepower and 671 lb.-ft. of torque. Dual air suspension, paired with 5-spoke wheels and aerodynamics, allows you to choose between a firm or soft ride based on your driving style and topography. The Pirelli Scorpion tires, front 265/40R22 and rear 295/35R22, gripped the asphalt in “performance AWD” mode and darted like greyhounds from the start. This method can drain your energy very quickly. The MSRP for the EX90 Twin Motor Performance Ultra is $93,345 and for the EX90 Twin Motor Performance Plus, $84,995. The Twin Motor powertrain with 402 horsepower is available in two versions: the Plus ($79,995) and the Ultra ($84,345). The e-SUV can be charged from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes using a DC fast charger (up to 250kW). It will make your EV life much easier knowing that you have a fully charged vehicle at the start of each day. Installing a vehicle by a licensed electrician can cost anywhere between $750 and $1,500 depending on where you are located. Download the ChargePoint App to activate the public charger and set up payment before you arrive. The interior is welcoming and holistic, with the Dawn Quilted Nordico Bio-based Seat Upholstery. The organic interior of the cabin calms your senses while evolutionary technology meets your connectivity needs. The EX90 is controlled by a Google-built in 14.5″ vertical touchscreen, which also includes Google Maps, Google Play and Google Assistant. Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity Audio System with Dolby atmos and integrated speakers in the headrests provides sound. The sound is reproduced as the engineers intended in the Abbey Road Studios mode. The cabin is silent until you turn up the 25-speaker, 3D sound system through the designer and metal grilles. The EX90 can also be controlled by your smartphone. This loads your profile as you enter the vehicle. The EX90 was also engineered using natural and responsibly sourced materials. The e-SUV, for example, is made up of 15% recycled steel and 25% recycled aluminum. It also contains over 105 pounds recycled plastics and biobased substances. The digital steering wheel, and the mirror adjustments that are controlled through the screen are a few of the things I dislike about the EX90. Also, the glovebox button can be found on the screen. The same as with basic functions such as volume and tuning the channel, I prefer to use physical knobs or buttons. The EX90, like all Swedish society, is built on safety, a free flowing mindset, and technology that is human-centric. This creates a safer and more value-based life. Volvo’s lidar laser-based system, which consists of eight cameras, five radios and 12 ultrasonic sensors, is capable of a wide range safety functions, including detecting objects on the road in complete darkness or daylight. Sensors inside the car evaluate your level of awareness and alert you if it’s time to rest or refocus. The EX90 will call for assistance if the driver does not react. NVIDIA Drive Orin also brings the EX90 to life. The impressive core computer enhances the owner’s experience with AI-based active security features, driving assistance, autonomous driving and over-the air software updates. The future will be greener, as transportation efficiency and sustainability improves. Volvo’s EV lineup is a testament to the fact that the EV infrastructure must be expanded and the battery technology improved continuously.
