Sure, these activations are mostly happening in North America, but that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate the luxury, technology and aesthetic excellence of these beasts. Here are five favourites from recent years.
Fragment Design Ghibli
In a partnership probably no one saw coming, the “godfather” of streetwear subculture Hiroshi Fujiwara teams up with the brand on the classic sedan. The result was the all-white Operabianca and full-black Operanera, which went down in history. The subtle alphanumeric code M157110519FRG is a stamp of Ghibli’s internal ID, the date of Fujiwara’s first visit to Centro Stile Maserati on 5 November 2019, and an acronym of Fragment.

This standout in Sleek Nero Essenza & Digital Mint has been themed with glossy black wheels and coloured Tridents. Not just the exterior is unceremoniously stylish. A carefully crafted interior with four-way lightweight monocoque racing seats and extensive use of carbon fiber in the cockpit are all fashioned in the name of acceleration.

There is Maserati F Tributo, a fitting tribute to Maria Teresa de Filippis – the first female Formula 1 competitor. The hot pink Barbiecore Grecale is more eye-catching. Only two Mattel SUVs are available worldwide in the ultra-limited edition. The Barbie Dream Gap Project, an initiative that works with charities to provide equal opportunities for girls, received a portion of the proceeds from the auction at Neiman-Marcus’ Fantasy Gift event. Besides the Barbie logo, pink stitching, and acid-yellow trimmings a nod to racing, this Trofeo version is finished with an iridescent topcoat for maximum glamour.

420M/58 (Eldorado)

Okay we know that we said recent but it would be a crime not to include a Maserati ordered by an ice-cream company. This mythical creature, which earned its name from Eldorado South in 1958, was created to compete in a racing race that aimed to combine European and American racing culture. The car reached a top-speed of 350km/h but its steering failed at 250km/h. Stirling Moss referred to this as the most terrifying motor racing accident in his career. Fortunately, he was unhurt and a final restoration of the automobile is part of the Umberto Panini Collection today.
