The Meaning of the Alfa Romeo DoppiaCoda Concept by Zagato

At the 2025 Concorso D’Eleganza villa d’Este held this past weekend, Zagato showcased its latest coachbuilt vehicles. The Milanese workshop also revealed the Alfa Romeo DoppiaCoda, a unique concept that reimagines iconic 8C Competizione. The 8C was produced between 2008 and 2010 and served as a base for Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera’s stunning Disco Volante. This particular build was commissioned by an Italian collector and is the follow-up project to the Giulia six-cylinder SWB from 2023. “We have started a new chapter of Zagato’s design. We are focusing on research tail sections and exploring aerodynamic and stylish solutions to inspire innovation.” The 8C DoppiaCoda is a fusion of a round tail and a truncated one, preserving the benefits of both. The new front fascia has revised air intakes, and sharper headlight profiles compared to the standard model. Black and Zagato’s double-bubble roof create a striking contrast with the red paintwork. This bespoke, one-off commission’s highlight is the name ‘DoppiaCoda,’ which translates into Italian as ‘double tail’. The DoppiaCoda, unlike the AGTZ Twin-Tail which has a detachable rear section, combines two of Zagato’s most distinctive designs codes. The wrap-around fixed wings, which appear detached from the rear view, are actually integrated into the body, and increase both downforce as well as aesthetic appeal.

Although there’s no word on the 8C Doppiacoda’s exact performance specifications, the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione featured a 4.7-liter Ferrari/Maserati F136 Yc V8 engine under the hood, with 444 horsepower available, paired to a six-speed automated manual transmission. This is a one-off bespoke build, with no further plans. The Alfa Romeo Doppiacoda won the Concept Car Cup at this year’s Villa d’Este, and not only does it serve as a reminder of beauty and individuality, but also a celebration of more than a century of collaboration between Zagato and Alfa Romeo.Source: Zagato, Alfa Romeo
