Inside a quest to map our universe using mysterious bursts radio energy

When the universe was only half as old as today, an energy burst that could have cooked a sun-worth of popcorn shot from somewhere among a compact cluster of galaxies. A radio telescope in Australia’s outback captured the radio waves of that burst 8 billion years after it occurred. Astronomers have detected nearly 5,000 fast radio bursts in the past 10 years. This particular one was special. It was three-and-a-half times more energetic and nearly twice as old as anything else previously observed.
