The 29 Best Ballet Flats of 2024, According to a Trend Forecaster
Ballet flats have finally offered fashion enthusiasts a far more comfortable (and risk-averse) option to heels, cementing themselves as one of 2024’s biggest shoe trends. They’ve never gone dormant, but their resurgence on the Spring 2024 runways has also awarded flat lovers with multiple styles for summer.
Pointed-toe flat versions appeared at Gabriela Hearst in New York and peppered the catwalks at Tove in London. Mary-Jane flats were a staple at Cecilie Bahnsen’s Paris show, and Versace styled similar metallic silhouettes for the evening with pant suits and mini dresses. The metallic shoe trend was later co-signed by Katie Holmes, who wore a silver pair in New York City. Mesh flat variations also appeared on 3.1 Philip Lim and Proenza Schouler’s New York City runways and are beloved by Jennifer Lawrence.
In short, they’ve grown up—and show no sign of slowing down. That is, according to Jessica Richards, Trend Forecaster and founder of JMR Trend and Creative. “The [ballet flat] trend is one of the strongest footwear trends we’ve seen in a long time,” she tells Marie Claire. In the future, she sees the trend focusing on more sophisticated silhouettes that command the authority of a loafer. “It speaks to consumers’ demands for uncompromised wearability.”
This is a thought echoed by fashion writer and self-proclaimed ballet flat super fan Erika Veurnik, who prefers flats as the ideal summer shoe. “Ballet flats are a dressed-up version of a sandal and a sneaker,” she says. “I reach for them instead of these two styles when I want my outfit to feel a little more refined.”
Summer’s ballet flats are a shoe style everyone can wear and love. Ahead, Marie Claire’s editors and our experts share the best ballet flats to invest in for this summer and beyond.
Models wore ballet flats on the Spring 2024 runways with day dresses at 3.1 Phillip Lim, shift dresses at Versace, and Grecian evening gowns at Tove, proving their innate versatility for the spring season.

Madewell Greta Ballet Flat
Mary Jane-style ballet flats aren’t going anywhere this season. They’ve appeared on the runways at fan-favorite brands like Sandy Liang and Akris and have officially been adopted by the streetwear crowd. The traditionally feminine shoes can be styled edgy, but I prefer to let them be their sweet selves alongside frilly socks or dresses. This pair from Madewell comes in a few colors, including this deep chocolate brown, and is in demand for its comfort and buttery-soft leather.

What to Look For In The Best Ballet Flats
- Fabric: Most ballet flats on this list are crafted from leather or satin. These materials mold to your feet for added comfort throughout the day. Opt for flexible fabrics to avoid rubbing or pinching.
- Insole and Arch Support: Flat shoes often lack arch support, but many of the options on this list feature insoles designed for comfort. From the office to after work obligations, these flats are perfect for extended wear.
- Fit: Most items on this list fit true-to-size and offer half-sizes for convenience. The key to comfy flats is finding the perfect fit—neither too tight nor too loose. Check reviews for firsthand sizing experiences, or look for brand sizing notes. We’ve indicated how each pair runs.
How to Style Ballet Flats
“The luxe ballerina flat elevates casual looks, but also works as an option for evening events,” says Richards. “Celebrities [and fashion insiders] are embracing the surprise and delight of an unexpected silhouette, so while a ballet flat may feel like the wrong formal shoe, it gives a joie de vivre to our looks,” she notes. Channel Katie Holmes’s recent look by teaming a navy midi dress with a pair of bright white flats, as she did in June 2024.
Holmes styled her Mary-Jane flats with a navy-and-white midi dress while in New York City in June 2024. Her look is equal parts elevated and easy.

One trend Veurnik sees growing this summer is metallic ballet flats. Hailed as a day-to-night option for people who prefer to avoid heels, opting for silver or gold options can make even the most classic outfits look a touch elevated—even if you’re just wearing them to work this summer.
But they don’t necessarily have to be styled for every day. “I love seeing silver ones with formal gowns for wedding looks, Veurnik tells Marie Claire. “Plus, silver flats were made to be paired with light wash denim.”
