Ten Ways to Save the Earth (and Money) in Under a Minute

You want to do something for the environment but don’t have time. You can save money and help the environment by doing 10 simple things in less than a minute:

1. Use Half the Amount (time: None):

Try to use half the amount you normally use. You can get the same results with most household products if you reduce your current usage by half. You can use this method for laundry detergent, shampoo and cleaning products, among others. Cold/Cold Wash (time: less than 5 seconds):

A simple knob turn can save you up to $100 in energy costs per year. You can save money by switching the temperature knob from hot/cold to cold/cold. A cold/cold washing can save you a lot of money, since the most expensive part of washing clothes is the heating up the water. Place A Towel in The Dryer (time : less than 15 seconds) :

Get the most absorbent towel that you can and place it next to your dryer. Towels should be thrown in with each new load of clothing to dry. This towel absorbs water and reduces the drying time of your entire load. It will also save you approximately 10% on energy. Turn down your water heater temperature

(This only takes a few seconds for gas heaters, but it can take a while for electric heaters. If you’re not mechanically inclined you might want to hire someone to do this for you.) Most water heaters have a higher setting than necessary. You can save up to 5% by lowering your water heater to 130degF. For every 10degF you lower the temperature, the water will cost less to heat. Adjust Your Thermostat (time: under 10 seconds):

. Adjust Your Thermostat (time: under 10 seconds):

With summer just around the corner, adjust your thermostat up a degree or two and for each degree you do so, you will save 3% to 4% on the cooling costs of your house.

6. Turn off the water when brushing or washing (time: less than 5 seconds):

A bathroom faucet uses about 2 gallons per minute. This means that every time you wash your hand or brush your teeth with the faucet on, you are using about 4 gallons. Turn Off Your Car Engine (time: under 5 seconds):

. Turn off your car engine (time: less than 5 seconds):

If you’re going to leave your car idling longer than 45 seconds, turning it off will save more fuel. You can restart the vehicle when you want to go. Close Cooling Vents (time: less than 5 seconds per vent):

There’s no need to cool areas of your home that you won’t be in. Close the cooling vents of all rooms that you do not spend much time in. You will save money and energy by closing all vents. Close the vents, but make sure there is no temperature sensor in the area.

9. Replace Light Bulbs: (Time: less than 30 seconds per bulb):

If not already done, replace your standard light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs. CLFs are ten times more efficient than regular bulbs and use only 25% as much energy. Over the life of each light bulb, you should save approximately $40 in energy consumption.

10. Turn off your lights (time: less than 5 seconds):

Turning the light switch when you leave a room is one of the easiest and most effective ways to help the environment while saving money. It is not necessary to leave lights on when no one is in the room.

It doesn’t require much effort or time to make a big difference. In less than 10 minutes, you can make a significant contribution to the environment and save yourself some money at the same time.
