Spike Lee named president of Red Sea International Film Festival Jury
Spike Lee is the head of the Red Sea International Film Festival jury.
The Malcolm X-inspired filmmaker will also participate in the Festival’s In Conversation strand, sharing insights. Lee will share insights in the Festival’s In Conversation strand.
The Yusr Awards were presented to the winners of the Yusr Awards for this fourth edition.
Lee, a film icon, won the Oscar for BlacKkKlansman in 2019 and is nominated for several other films. Malcolm X, Da 5 Bloods, and Do The Right Thing are some of his previous movies. Joe Biden awarded him the National Medal of Arts and Humanities.
Lee stated: “Having experienced first-hand in 2022 the incredible filmmaking and atmosphere at the Red Sea International Film Festival, it is a privilege to return this year as the President of the Jury.” It’s important to support young and emerging film-makers who are discovering their voice in the business. Along with creating a melting pan for cultures to celebrate our art form, it is also vital to create a melting pot where cultures can come together to celebrate this important art.
Jomana al Rashid, chairwoman of the Red Sea Film Foundation said: “As we look forward to our fourth edition of the festival, we are honoured to have the legendary Spike Lee serve as the President of Jury this year. Spike Lee is a pioneering filmmaker whose work has had a lasting influence on film and culture. He is a pioneering director whose iconic work has had a lasting impact on both film as a medium and culture at large.
The festival is gaining momentum and yesterday, it was announced that Thierry Fremaux Lumiere: Le Cinema would be part of the line-up. Other projects include Pablo Larrain’s Maria and J.C. Chandor’s Kraven the Hunter.
The festival takes place from 5 December to 14 December in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia).
