Power Rangers Behind the Camera 15 years ago

The Power Rangers have always followed the same rules, no matter what the name, song, or network. You knew exactly what to expect each week, and that made it a favorite among kids all over the world. Surprisingly, the series offered up a truly unique change of pace once during its 30-year run, and it made for a pretty memorable episode on top of what’s already a well-liked season.

Earlier this week, the Power Rangers RPM episode “And…Action!” turned 15 years old. It was originally broadcast on September 12, 2009. This behind-the-scenes episode shows how non-Ranger scenes and fights are made for an RPM episode, which is not from the Japanese show Go-Onger. There’s also an added gimmick: The cast is still in character. So, Ziggy (Milo Cawthorne), for example, will give you tips on how to play out a scene as Ziggy. Flynn, meanwhile, will talk about stunt driving. There’s a blooper video, of course. And at the end, the Rangers themselves watch the completed action beat while giving commentary and munching on popcorn.

Since RPM was initially meant as the final Rangers season period before Nickelodeon stepped in, the show decided to do something completely unconventional. It is the only episode of the entire run that breaks the fourth wall. It’s a nice touch that viewers can see what goes into making the show while still being able to relate it to the rest of RPM. Hats off to writer Judd Lynn and director Mike Smith for finding a way to have some fun. It’s a great way for viewers to learn about the production of the show, while still remaining canon. The existence of this show also shows how TV has changed over the last 15 years. The bulky RPM episode count is essential to “And…Action!” as it’s episode 23 in a season of 32 episodes. The longer episode count allowed shows to do quirky one-offs that would play with formulas or just provide a break from the main plot. TV seasons are shorter these days. The franchise’s most recent (and final) core series, 2023’s Cosmic Fury, had just 10 episodes. “And…Action!” isn’t a groundbreaking episode, but it’s a fascinating, endearing swing for the franchise, and what more do you need from the Power Rangers than that?
