Marvel Comics Still Doesn’t Want Peter Parker Married Again
As reported by PopVerse over the weekend, Tom Brevoort, the current X-Men Editor, answered a question regarding Marvel’s editorial mandates at a panel during Baltimore Comic Con. Brevoort responded, “If you work for Marvel, then the ground rules are that all characters are Marvel characters and Marvel as an organization gets to decide what is right and wrong for these characters. There are some things that you do not want Spider-Man doing. If you’re going to work on Daredevil, then you have to deal with the fact that he is blind and he will probably stay that way for a while. The insistence that Peter Parker should remain single and swinging within the MCU mainline has been the subject of intense debate over the years. It culminated in 2007 with the One More Day story line. Parker made a terrible mistake in his desperate attempt to save Aunt May for just a few precious years. He agreed to a deal with Mephisto to give up his marriage to Mary Jane. Mephisto was not legally married to Mary Jane, but he found that the annulment of the marriage to be fair because he is the devil in incarnation. We’re told that the devils and gods have a plan beyond our mortal comprehension. The deal was a success for Marvel’s editorial team, as it removed their star character from marital bliss to place him in the dating pool of the Marvel Universe. On the whole, readers were not happy with the development.
Despite fan outcry, Marvel refused to budge on the decision and Peter and Mary Jane continue living in sin to this very day. The outlet does note that the couple is indeed back together in Ultimate Spider-Man. This series takes place in a different timeline than the mainline Marvel line. Want more io9 News?
