Being a Florida teacher (or in any other state for that matter) can be incredibly rewarding. This is a career with clear steps for certification and getting to where you want. There is also a great need for instructors right now. What are the requirements to become a Florida teacher? What you should know.

Meet the Basic Education Requirements

To teach in Florida, you need at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Your degree should be related to education if you want to teach in elementary, middle or high schools. You may need a specialized education in some cases. If you wish to teach elementary school students, for example, you may need a degree from the Early Childhood Education. Florida offers alternative certifications for those with degrees other than education. These programs can help career changers make the transition from another field to teaching.

Pass Required Certification Exams

Florida’s requirements for aspiring teachers include passing the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations. The General Knowledge Test assesses reading, writing and math basics. The Subject Area Examination (SAE), which evaluates your expertise in the chosen teaching subject, is the Subject Area Examination. The Professional Education Test (PEd), which measures knowledge of pedagogical principles and pedagogical concepts, is the Professional Education Test. Depending on the certification path, some candidates may need to pass other exams. Complete a Teacher Preparedness Program

If you do not have a degree in education, then you will need to complete a teacher preparation program. Florida offers a variety of pathways including university-based courses and alternative certifications. Career changers often choose the Educator Preparation Institute. These programs include essential teaching methods, classroom administration, and techniques for student assessment. Most programs require classroom teaching experience in order to prepare the candidates for real world instruction.

Apply for a Florida Teaching Certificate

Once you’ve met the educational and testing requirements, you can apply for certification through the Florida Department of Education. First, submit an online application along with your transcripts and scores. Florida offers a temporary certificate for those who have met the basic requirements, but need to finish additional coursework or exams. The Professional Certificate, a full certification that is valid for 5 years, is the standard. All applicants must also undergo fingerprinting and background checks. Gain Classroom Experience

Most programs for teacher preparation require that you gain classroom experience through an internship or student teaching. Mentoring new teachers helps them develop their classroom management skills. Florida offers internships and residencies in subject areas of high demand. You can begin teaching while you complete additional requirements if you hold a Temporary certificate. Some schools have mentorship programs for new teachers.

Advance Your Teaching Career with Additional Certifications

After gaining initial certification, teachers can expand their career opportunities with additional credentials. The job prospects of teachers who earn endorsements such as English for Speakers Of Other Languages (ESOL), or Reading, are increased. Florida offers leadership certifications to those who want to become school administrators. A master’s in education can result in higher salaries and more specialized roles. Many districts offer professional development programs for teachers to grow. As a child I wanted to be a teacher. Although I did not pursue this career, I respect those who have.
