Jigsaw puzzles: 11 reasons to do them

In our electronic world, the old-fashioned puzzle is often overlooked. Some people think that jigsaw puzzles are boring because they’re not exciting or sexy. Jigsaw puzzles can be a cheap and fun way to entertain yourself. As you pass the jigsaw puzzles in the toy department on the way to the more glamorous Lego’s, Leap Pads, iPads, and console games, here are some reasons why you should stop and take a longer look at the puzzles.

Inexpensive

Jigsaw puzzles are cheaper than many other toys and entertainment choices. Some stores sell 1,000-piece puzzles for less than $5. Boxes with multiple puzzles can be found for less than $10. You can buy jigsaws that have large pieces for children or people with dexterity issues. You can find puzzles with thousands of pieces for those who want a challenge. (I saw one with 32,000) Or you can choose puzzles in one color to drive yourself insane. There are also many middle-of-the road puzzles. Puzzles last

A good puzzle can keep you entertained for a long time. You get more entertainment for less money. Puzzles test your spatial reasoning and logic, as well as dexterity. They also work both sides simultaneously, which is something that few other activities can do. The creative side works to see the finished product, while the logical side works to fit the pieces.

Social Interaction

While a puzzle taxes your brain, it’s not so demanding that you can’t talk with your friends or family while working on it. The best conversations have been had in our house over puzzles. They don’t increase your electricity bill, and they can be used during storms or snowstorms. It gives you something to do when other options aren’t available.

Improve Your Concentration

Nothing teaches you to focus and concentrate on a task like finding the right piece to go into the puzzle. You also learn patience because it can be quite a while before the puzzle starts to come together and you have to keep plugging away at it until it does.

Help Your Subconscious

They give your subconscious a chance to work on other things. Puzzles allow your mind to relax and focus on other things. When I’m having a hard time or needing to solve a problem I take out a piece of puzzle. I’ve come up with some of my best ideas and solutions while puzzling.

Inexpensive Artwork

If you glue a finished puzzle together and mount it, you’ve got some interesting artwork for your house or apartment. Puzzle glue and a frame or mounting board are inexpensive.

Educational Tool

I’ve learned about art and geography from puzzles. Puzzles of famous paintings and places have inspired me to look for more information.

Arthritis Help

Puzzles provide a gentle and enjoyable way for patients to improve dexterity and exercise their hands. Moving pieces, picking them up, and turning them doesn’t seem like much to someone with normal dexterity, but to an arthritis sufferer it can be a meaningful challenge.

The next time you’re looking for some entertainment on a budget, don’t just skip past the jigsaw puzzle aisle. The cost of a jigsaw puzzle is low, and you get a lot for your money. This is not true of many other forms of entertainment. Making these even more budget friendly, chance are you have a few neglected puzzles in your closet right now.
