Los Angeles County is covered in ash and smoke since nearly a week. Numerous residents have lost their homes, are displaced and multiple celebrities. More than 10 deaths have been reported. Many Southern Californians are asking themselves how they will survive the destruction. More than 20,000 acres of land in L.A. has been destroyed, and many homes have been reduced to rubble. The damage was caused by extreme wind gusts, and the county remains under a red-flag warning.
How Many Fires Are in L.A.?
Currently, there are four fires burning throughout L.A.: the Palisades fire, the Eaton fire, the Hurst fire and the Kenneth fire. Palisades Fire had flare-ups, after it caused mass destruction. The fire ravaged many neighborhoods including Pacific Palisades, Malibu and others. Eaton Fire, which broke out shortly after Palisades fire, affected Altadena, Pasadena, and Pasadena. The Hurst and Kenneth fires followed suit and have yet to be fully contained.
Residents in Hollywood were concerned when the Sunset fire broke out. The inferno was contained within a single day by firefighters. Smoky, eerie pictures of The Hollywood Sign circulated online as many thought that Hollywood was completely demolished.

How many fires broke out during the first week in January 2025 in L.A. County?
During this time, six different fires were reported in L.A. County. These included the Palisades, Eaton, Hurst and Kenneth Fires. The Sunset and Lidia Fires also broke out but were contained sooner than others. In addition to the Palisades, Eaton, Hurst and the Kenneth fires, the Sunset fire and the Lidia fire also broke out but were contained sooner than the others.
California Fires Containment Status
The following is the containment status for each L.A. wildfire as of Saturday, January 11, 2025, according to Cal Fire:
Palisades fire: 11 percent contained
Eaton fire: 15 percent contained
Kenneth fire: 80 percent contained
Hurst fire: 76 percent contained
- Sunset fire: 100 percent contained on Thursday, January 9, 2025
- Lidia fire: 100 percent contained on Saturday, January 11, 2025
