Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam – Luxury Historic Shipping House
Luxury According to Gracie: One of My Most Unusual Hotel Experiences in Amsterdam
As someone who has reviewed over 400 hotels, I have to say this was one of the most unusual and captivating stays I have ever experienced. The Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam is what I call the ultimate luxury quirky stay.
A Journey Through History
Originally built in the early 20th century, the building was once the joint head office for six shipping companies. They consolidated their operations here, selling tickets for sea voyages to the Dutch East Indies and Africa. Recently transformed into a luxury hotel, the building’s architecture embodies the distinct “Amsterdamse School” style, blending history with modern opulence.
From the outside, it’s impossible not to be drawn in by the quirky yet grand appearance. The exterior is a masterpiece of curiosity. Hundreds of statues, crafted from lead, adorn the façade, including mythical figures like Poseidon and Fortuna. The welded metalwork, both outside and throughout the interior, showcases outstanding craftsmanship. I highly recommend taking a stroll around the building to admire its artistic details.
The Carpet and the Craft
One of the most unforgettable aspects was the carpet design—original and carefully preserved. It complements the heavy wood, creating a balance between texture and color. As a fashion enthusiast, I couldn’t resist photographing my shoes against this rich backdrop. The suite is not just a place to stay; it’s a living, breathing part of Amsterdam’s history.
The Reception and Public Spaces: A Story of the Sea
Stepping into the reception area is like entering a maritime fantasy. The craftsmanship, inspired by sea voyages and shipping, is everywhere. The whole building feels more like a museum than a hotel, and I found myself pausing at every corner, soaking in the artistry.

Personal Significance and Design Philosophy
Back in the day, the rooms were designated based on one’s status, and naturally, I found myself in the director’s room. It was a space designed to impress, to inspire. The woodwork, especially at night, has a heavy, almost intense presence, while the stained glass windows reflect the hotel’s shipping heritage. Every detail, from the handcrafted carpets to the carved doors, tells a story. To fully appreciate the suite’s grandeur, I recommend booking a guided tour of the hotel’s history.
An Indulgent Stay: Modern Comforts Amidst History
The suite, ranging from 80 to 100 square meters, includes a spacious living area, a bedroom, a multifunctional room that could be used as a study or additional bedroom, and a colossal bathroom. The bathroom alone is a modern marvel, complete with a separate toilet room and a functional kitchenette. The free minibar was an unexpected delight—a chance to sip wine while soaking in the ambiance.
With three large windows, the room is flooded with natural light during the day. Electric curtains offer complete darkness at night, perfect for restful sleep. Each of the three rooms features its own TV, which is a blessing when traveling with family.
The Monumental Suite: A Luxurious Time Capsule
During my stay, I was lucky enough to be accommodated in one of the Monumental Suites, the former directors’ rooms located at the tip of the Scheepvaarthuis, right above the entrance. As I walked through the corridors, I couldn’t help but wonder what lay behind the door. Upon entering, I almost thought I had stepped into a historic conference room rather than a suite!
The suite itself was nothing short of breathtaking. The original furniture, dating back over a century, is beautifully preserved. One of the most striking features was the heavy Gothic-style chairs, each with a unique code on the underside to prove authenticity. Moving them was a two-person job! The rich purple upholstery and dark wood set a commanding, almost regal atmosphere.

Events and Relaxation
For those looking to host an event, the Entertainment Room is a grand option. The long chess-table-style seating adds a stately touch. My stay also included a 30-minute massage, which I greatly appreciated after weeks of travel. The wellness area, with its three sauna rooms at varying temperatures, was the perfect place to unwind.
An Exclusive Touch: Rooftop Views
One evening, I was invited to the rooftop for a private champagne toast. The panoramic view of Amsterdam at sunset was breathtaking. This rooftop access is reserved for special events and private guests—a truly memorable experience.
Why This Hotel Stands Out
In a world of cookie-cutter luxury hotels, the Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam dares to be different. It’s not just about staying in luxury; it’s about living history. The hotel is a reminder of Amsterdam’s rich past, thoughtfully preserved and elegantly presented. Whether you are a history buff, a luxury traveler, or simply curious, this hotel is an experience not to be missed.
If you’re visiting Amsterdam and want to immerse yourself in architectural heritage while indulging in luxury, this is the place. As someone who appreciates timeless craftsmanship and the unexpected, I can confidently say that this stay left a lasting impression.
