You want to make sure you enjoy your hotel stay, especially with the high cost of accommodation. If you are disappointed when you get to the hotel and find that it is not what you were promised, you may be forced to stay in less than desirable conditions. Some chains are known for being dirty and gross. Here is a look at the dirtiest hotel chains in the United States and what previous guests have to say about their experience.

4. Motel 61001010The Motel 6 is known to provide affordable accommodation. Charlotte’s prices are not higher than $76 a night. You get what you paid for. Motel 6 has a good reason for being on the list of the dirtiest hotels in the U.S. Consumer Affairs reviews cite several locations as “disgusting”, “unsafe” with a rating of 2.3 stars. Sixty-four out of 868 reviews are one-star reviews. One reviewer stated that the room smelled of “ammonia” and “mildew”.

Kate, from Henderson, Nevada said “the conditions weren’t only unsanitary, but also unsafe.” The main issues we faced were: A filthy, sub-standard room: Our room was shockingly dirty when we arrived. Vomit was on the refrigerator, which was broken. There were dried bodily fluids on different surfaces. It was clear that the room had not been properly cleaned or maintained.”

3. Econo Lodge

Prices at the Econo Lodge can be even lower than Days Inn. There are no hotels in Charlotte, NC that cost more than $82. You may save money, but it could cost you elsewhere. Econo Lodge has received 2.1 stars from Consumer Affairs. Out of 246 reviews 110 are one-star ratings. The majority of people complained about the poor service and lack of cleanliness at the hotel. One reviewer said that they found drugs and empty syringes hidden in their rooms.

Jolene, from Modesto in California, wrote: “The econo Lodge was the dirtiest place I have ever stayed in my entire life.” The hotel had no roof. The windows were not locked or closed. The ceiling and bathtub of the bathroom were covered in mold. The bathroom door was broken. The room was dirty. I was very disappointed.”

2. Super 8

Super 8, although cheaper, has only a 1.7 star rating on Consumer Affairs. Super 8 has 607 reviews, with 420 receiving a 1-star rating. The most common complaints include moldy rooms, dirty accommodations and unprofessional front desk staff. One traveler, Rebecca, from Anaconda in Montana, complained that the hotel was “old and rundown”. It took over 10 minutes before the clerk showed up at front desk. The mattress was old and worn. It had a large hole in the center that I kept rolling down into, making it difficult to sleep. The carpet was worn. The facility had an old, sour odor. There were no washcloths in the bathroom. Amenities skimpy. The hair dryer was plugged in to an electric outlet with dirt/dust coming out.”

1. Days Inn

Days Inn offers travelers affordable accommodation at more than 1,200 locations in the United States. In most places, prices will range between $45 and just over $100 per day. The average cost of a night in a hotel is currently around $148. That’s a pretty good deal. Consumer Affairs reviews give Days Inn 1.5 stars. Out of the 519 reviews on the website, 365 were 1-star reviews. Customer complaints include dirty rooms, “sketchy”, locations, bedbugs, lack of wheelchair-accessible rooms and poor customer service. One review was a horror story. Ed from Amarillo in Texas wrote: “The room was disgusting. Room with a pile of dog poop. Tub is dirty. Dirty walls. No manager was on site when I tried to speak to the front desk. Hair on the sink area. “Bugs in light fixtures.” Traveling can be expensive. If you plan to book a hotel stay soon, it’s best to avoid the chains. You may want to check reviews of the specific hotel before spending any money. Some people have had trouble getting their money refunded after staying in these hotels. You’ll probably bring home bed bugs (at worst) and remember the experience for months.
