Cate Blanchett Sets Return To London Stage
Cate Blanchett will star in a new stage version of Anton Chekhov’s play The Seagull, at the Barbican Theatre in London.
Blanchett will be making her first appearance on stage in six years.
Blanchett is set to play Arkadina, and Tom Burke (The Souvenir) will also star in the adaptation. The production will last six weeks starting in February 2025.
Thomas Ostermeier will direct the production. He told BBC News about Blanchett’s casting, “I’ve known and admired Cate since many years ago and to see her perform is always a pleasure.”
He said: “I’m thrilled that this production of The Seagull will be our first artistic partnership at the Barbican and that Londoners will get to see this actress, who is a once-in-a generation perform one of the most important theatrical roles in Arkadina. Tom Burke will be playing the role of Trigorin. I am also delighted to form a new creative relationship with him.
Blanchett & Burke worked on Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag. Focus Features has acquired the film, and set a release date of March 14, 2025.
Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Rege-Jean Page and Burke star in this high-stakes thriller. Also starring are Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris and Pierce Brosnan. Casey Silver, Greg Jacobs are the producers. David Koepp wrote a screenplay.
Blanchett’s next project will be Alfonso Cuaron’s Disclaimer, an eight-episode series on Apple TV+. The series will debut globally on October 11, with the first two installments. New episodes will then air every Friday until November 15.
Disclaimer, written and directed by Cuaron and based on Renee Knight’s best-selling book of the same title, follows journalist Catherine Ravenscroft. (Blanchett), a journalist who made her name exposing the transgressions and misdeeds of others. She is shocked to discover that she has become the protagonist of a story based on a novel written by an unknown author.
