Captain America: Brave New World will be the first film for Anthony Mackie, who took over the role of Sam Wilson in 2021 with The Falcon & Winter Soldier. The movie had a bad run of luck before its release. Production delays due to the Hollywood strike, negative test screenings that led to multiple reshoots, and the removal or alteration of supporting characters such as Sabra were all comical. The real-world context, the current US administration and the increasing hostility towards anything that could be critical of this country made it seem like the movie would be a complete mess. And after all this time, it turned out to be….a mess and all over the place.
Reviews and impressions for Brave New World haven’t been kind. The film’s story, and what it is trying to say or not say has been the most criticized. For some, the fraught production is evident, while for others it’s just another Captain America film that does well enough to kick-off Marvel’s 2025 slate. Marvel has a history of dividing audiences, but this movie is likely to remain in the spotlight for some time as people debate what it almost was before becoming what we see now.
