A second lawyer takes on Medication Abortion in court

The fight over access to mifepristone took on a different form last week. Attorneys for GenBioPro, a manufacturer of generic abortion drug mifepristone (one of two used in the United States), filed a motion last week to intervene on behalf of their product against the latest quack theory of the conservative legal movement. Missouri et. al. The case, Missouri et al. Mifepristone, a pain reliever that is as safe as Tylenol, was filed in Texas by conservative attorneys general from Kansas Missouri and Idaho. They wanted to revive false claims that mifepristone was dangerous and should be heavily regulated or removed from the market entirely. The Roberts Court’s unanimous decision to dismiss a similar challenge last summer to mifepristone was viewed by many as a dare to try their luck again. The Roberts Court ruled unanimously last year that anti-science extremists who brought this case lacked the standing to bring it. However, far-right state attorney generals continue to use our courts as a weapon to try and push their agenda, according to Skye Perryman. She is the president and CEO and also serves as counsel for this company. These politicians, despite the fact that the majority of Americans — including the constituents of the attorneys general in question — support the legal right to an abortion, are determined to restrict access to the drug. Women across America rely on this drug. The real kicker is that Perryman’s attack on mifepristone goes beyond reducing abortion access. They are trying to undermine the drug regulation system in this nation. It’s not for any reason other than pure politics or the fact that Trump judge Matthew Kacsmaryk oversees this case. The real test for the conservative legal movement to overturn medication abortion access and our entire drug regulatory system begins then.
