I remember when I was in college and had to work full-time while attending classes full-time and pay rent and food. It was stressful. I would sometimes think of what I could sacrifice to make life easier. But caffeine was always there. With a little creativity and planning you don’t even have to give up coffee. Here are seven easy ways to save on college expenses without sacrificing too much.

1. Brew your Coffee at Home

Invest in brewing coffee at home and save money on daily coffee shop trips. You can save hundreds of dollars per semester by purchasing a basic French press or coffee maker. Bulk coffee or coffee grounds are cheaper than $5 lattes every day. Add your favorite creamers, syrups or toppings for a coffee shop-like experience at home.

2. Take Advantage of Student Discounts

Being a college student has its perks–many businesses offer student discounts, including coffee shops and bookstores. Ask for discounts wherever you go and always carry your student ID. You can save money by participating in student or loyalty programs at some coffee shops. Showing your ID can get you discounts on groceries and supplies.

3. Buy Used or Digital Textbooks

Textbooks can be one of the biggest expenses in college, but you don’t have to pay full price. You can save money by buying used books, renting them or purchasing digital versions. For affordable options, check out websites such as Amazon, Chegg or your campus bookshop. Joining textbook exchange groups and borrowing books from older students are also ways to save.

4. Meal prepping is another way to save on college expenses. Eating out or eating on campus can drain your budget quickly. You can save money by prepping meals at the start of each week. Bulk-buy groceries and prepare meals that you can store at your apartment or dorm. This will not only save you money but also help you to eat better and avoid expensive takeout.

5. Utilize Free Campus Resources

Colleges offer a wealth of free resources that can help you save money. Free gym memberships are available, as well as library services, tutoring and career counseling. There are also many free events on campus, such as movie nights, concerts and workshops. You’ll save money on entertainment and services by utilizing these resources.

6. Carpool or Use Public Transportation

Transportation costs can add up, but there are ways to save. It’s a good idea to carpool with classmates or friends in order to reduce gas costs and wear on your vehicle. Use public transportation instead, which can be free or heavily discounted to students. Some campuses offer free shuttle service to nearby areas.

7. Sell What You Don’t Need

Declutter your space and make some extra cash by selling items you no longer need. Poshmark Marketplace, Facebook Marketplace or eBay are great platforms to sell old clothes, electronics or furniture. You can also take part in yard sales on campus or trade with other students. You can use the extra money to pay for your coffee or other necessities. Enjoy Coffee and Save

At least, you don’t have to sacrifice the things you enjoy (like your daily cup of coffee) for a college education. You can save money on college no matter what your budget is by adopting one or more of these strategies. You’ll remember this period fondly one day as the best years of you life. Read More
