TikTok was down for all American users and influencers hours before the ban of January 19, 2025 took effect. As soon as Americans opened their apps and discovered that they could no longer post videos, social media exploded with “RIP” jokes and memes. How long could TikTok be banned in the U.S.?

TikTok was banned because of concerns raised by lawmakers about its security.
TikTok has been banned in America due to the fears that it would be misused and misrepresented. The government was worried that the Chinese government could access and steal American users’ data on the social media app, and also use it to spread misinformation.
TikTok is owned by a company named ByteDance, which is headquartered in Beijing, China. Congress gave the company time to sell it to a U.S.-approved company, or else the app would be blocked in America. The legislation was signed into law by President Joe Bibi in mid-2024. Can I Still Use My TikTok Account?
Technically, American TikTok users can still use their accounts, but they can’t post new content, reload their friends’ posts or buy anything in the app’s shop. The videos and profiles of each user have not been removed. On January 18, all Americans were greeted by the message “Sorry TikTok’s not available at this time.” In the U.S., a law has been passed that bans TikTok.
