The Light, a Tom Tykwer film, will open the Berlin Film Festival.

The Light (Das Licht), the latest film by German director Tom Tykwer, will be shown at the Berlin Film Festival.
The screening will be held on February 13th, 2025. The film will be shown in Berlinale Palast out of competition.
The film stars German actors Lars Eidinger and Nicolette Krebitz.

The story is told by the Engels. Tim (Lars Eidinger), Milena, (Nicolette Krebitz), Frieda and Jon (Julius Gauuse), and Milena’s son Dio are a family who live more side-by-side than together. Nothing holds them together until Farrah’s (Tala al-Deen) housekeeper enters their life. The mysterious woman, originally from Syria, puts the Engels to a test that they never expected and brings out feelings that were long hidden. She pursues her own plan that will change the life of the family.

Tom Tykwer opened the Berlinale two times before: in 2002, with his first production of international quality Heaven, and in 2009, with The International.

Tykwer made a statement in the morning saying, “I am overjoyed to be opening next year’s Berlinale by The Light.” “The Berlinale, to me, is the festival of life. This film is my longing. “This film is my desire.”
The Light was produced in collaboration with ZDF, ARP Selection Gold Rush Pictures Gretchenfilm, and B.A. Filmproduktion. Warner Bros. will distribute the film in German cinemas from March 20th, 2025. Beta Cinema handles world sales.

Tricia Tuttle, Berlin Festival Director said today: “We knew that as soon as The Light was released we wanted it to open the 75th Berlinale.” “Tom Tykwer captures the essence and beauty of modern life in a world that is often divided and difficult. We are delighted to welcome Tom Tykwer back to Berlinale for Das Licht (The Light).
