Money

Dave asks: Are they up to the task? What About The Benefits Of Staying Around?

Dear Dave.

My wife and I started your plan several months ago. We have gained control over our finances by living within a budget. Do you think it’s a good idea to include teenagers in budget meetings and financial discussions? Do you think it’s a good idea to include teenagers in budget meetings and financial discussions?

Paula

Dear Paula,

This is a great question! I think that it is a great idea as long as the situation doesn’t get extreme, such a bankruptcy or foreclosure. It’s one thing to teach kids about money by using a regular monthly budget. As a parent you do not want to place your children in situations that they are not emotionally prepared to handle. Parents who don’t let their children handle money and teach them money management skills run the risk of creating financially irresponsible adulthood. It’s not good for anyone.
A typical budget can show you how much money comes in and what things cost. The cost of groceries and the electric bill will be clearly shown on paper. Then, when it’s right there in front of their eyes, they’ll begin to realize why mom and dad always tell them not to waste food, and to turn off the lights when they leave a room!

Dear Dave,

I am currently serving in the military, and I’m not sure I like the life, or what I’m doing, as much as I did a few years ago. Recently, a new opportunity was presented to me outside of the military. I don’t know what to do. Do you think I should make plans to take advantage of these new opportunities, or should I stick with the military and receive full benefits when I’m eligible to retire in 10 years?

William

Dear William,

There are people who absolutely love the military. Some people find it a rewarding career, and I agree. God bless you for serving your country in this way. If you are just a few short months from retiring, I would tell you to keep going and do your best. You’d have plenty of time to explore new opportunities, and you would also receive a pension. It’s a long time for someone to work on something they don’t enjoy. Stay if you love it. If you don’t, get out. In a way, serving in the military is voluntary. It’s not worth it to stay in a miserable job for 10 years just to collect benefits. It’s not the best plan.
