About Fred Meyer Stores
Originally founded in 1922, Fred Meyer was started by Frederick Grubmeyer, a German immigrant and native of New York. Meyer opened the first Fred Meyer in Portland, Oregon with a marketing strategy that was innovative at the time: one-stop shopping. In the 1930s, people would often shop at different stores to get different products – meat in one, cheese in another, etc. Meyer brought all these goods under one roof, and assigned an expert to each department. It worked and Fred Meyer stores continued to grow after Meyer’s passing in 1978. The grocery chain was acquired by the Kroger corporation in 1999 and is now part of the Kroger family of brands (1,2,3).

Fred Meyer offers a lower price than other supermarkets such as Safeway and Whole Foods. However, there are many ways to save even more than their low base prices.
1. Sign Up For Their Rewards System.
Getting into Fred Meyer’s rewards system sets you up for automatic delivery of their coupons. Fred Meyer uses a marketing system that tracks your purchases and sends you coupons on items you buy frequently, as well as coupons to help them sell more. Fred Meyer offers two different ways to send coupons. They’ll first send you coupons inside an envelope. Here’s what they look like:
And here is another example:
Using Fred Meyer coupons won’t make you an overnight millionaire, but it will consistently save you money if plan ahead. Sign up at the Customer Service Desk. Both the coupon and receipt must be current, and the coupon must still be valid.
2. Use Receipt Scanning Apps After You’re Done Shopping
One really solid way to save money at Fred Meyer is to load up on all the receipt scanning apps you can.
Get the following and get them set up on your smartphone:
1. Fetch
2. Ibotta
There may be others, but these are the two you should use at least because they work and are integrated into Fred Meyer’s Marketing. Scan your receipts after you’ve bought your groceries to earn points. You’ll also want to check these apps in advance – you may be able to get some items at 100% off. Fred Meyer may have it on hand, but that depends on the food producer’s desire to increase sales. Please Be Polite And Respectful To The Fred Meyer Staff. They are usually paid low wages and have to deal daily with angry customers, thieves, insensitive managers, and crazy people. Some Fred Meyer stores have chronically low staffing. This means that if you have a bad attitude or are rude to the staff, they will be less willing to work with you. You may lose discounts, receive a slower service or even be refused service. Negotiate.
Fred Meyer department managers have the power to issue discounts. If you are buying high-end electronics, ask for a discounted price. If you’re respectful about it, you have a positive attitude and a reasonable rationale for why they should discount the item, you might be able to convince the department manager to give you the additional savings.
Specifically, if the product is damaged in any way – for example if the bag is ripped or if the box you’re buying is crushed, ask for a discount. You’ll get it.
5. Always Check Your Receipts.
Fred Meyer’s internal computer systems are not always updated, so always check your receipt to be sure it matches the price displayed on the shelves. The Fred Meyer app can be difficult to use. You can sometimes miss out on deals you thought you were eligible for. Check your receipt to find out.
6. Every Fred Meyer has two or more discount racks. One is for bakery items and the other for non-perishable groceries. The bakery rack is usually located in the back, next to the dairy department. The rack for non-perishables is typically in the middle. The bakery shelf is usually filled with day-old bread, bagels and cakes from Fred Meyer’s bakery. The bread in this section is prone to mold. Even when marked down, the goods on the bakery discount rack may not be the lowest priced. The non-perishables shelf is a great place to find some amazing bargains. Boxes of oatmeal can be found for only 50 cents, and cans of Campbell’s soup can be purchased for just 10 cents. Check the rack of non-perishables every time. The deals are not always good. There is also a frozen food section that can be discounted. Read More
